Eirtakon T-Shirt Mods Competition Announced

Friday, 15 July 2011 12:42

Feeling creative? Time to break out the scissors and the fabrics as we announce the first Eirtakon t-shirt competition!

The idea is simple - use an Eirtakon t-shirt to make something new by either modifying it or making a new garment using the print from it. It can be a modified t-shirt, a new t-shirt, a bag, a wallet, a pair of shoes, a bracelet... let your imagination run riot on this one!

Entrants can register on the weekend at our registration desk and we will be showcasing every entrant as part of our fashion show on Sunday afternoon.

A few rules and regs:

  1. All entries must be the person's own work.
  2. The finished garment can be an item of clothing or an accessory.
  3. The item will be desplayed on stage as part of the Sunday fashion show.
  4. The full print doesn't need to be used but at the very least the word 'Eirtakon' and Lori's head/face must be visable.
  5. The item may not show any other logos apart from those taken from Eirtakon merchandise.

Best of luck to everyone! Check back again next week for another exclusive announcement!

Panels updates!

Tuesday, 12 July 2011 00:50

Brocon has some bad news and some good news. I always like to start with the bad..

so the bad news is Amy King’s (Eirtakon and Experience Japan, Cosplay and Fashion Coordinator) funds are low as result will not  be able to attend the brocon 2011.. :-(

So the good news??
there is none….
Nope we lied. :-)  Of course there is good news!
Our friend at Nom-Con Sinead Lynch (cosplay co-ordinator of Nom-con) said that she would be do a panel for us!!
So what will Sinead be covering? This is how she described it to me!

A short tutorial on how to make costumes from scratch with minimal hassle or stress. Missiechan discusses pattern drafting, fabric choices, quick cheats and how to avoid losing fingers when using an overlocker.

…..

Basically I’m going to take the attendees through the steps I use when I’m crafting a cosplay. I’ll show them how to draft a quick circle skirt that can be adapted for cloaks and hakama pants, what fabrics work best with which costumes and how to look their best in front of the camera.

Is it just us or does this sound good?

Cosplay at Brocon

Thursday, 07 July 2011 19:23

Hey
At brocon we are having a masquerade cosplay competition. It is the competition where cosplayers go on the stage and show off their costumes they worked on, do a little performance and walk off. There will be 3 judges of mixed gender eg two girls and one guy or two guys and one girl.
How we judge the masquerade is; each of the judges has a sheet of paper and we mark each cosplayer 1-10 in three categories being;
1. Likeness to the character eg does the cosplayer pull off the character look like them.
2. Performance – How does the cosplayer present themselves on the stage, mark them on their act.
3. Effort – Did the cosplayer put alot effort into making the cosplay.
Then we calculate all the marks and the highest marked cosplayer wins.
We are not sure how many prizes are going to be handed out yet or what they will be.
But we hope you will come and enjoy the event!

So sign up here For free!

Coming along to Q-Con on the day?

Monday, 20 June 2011 14:13

Q-Con Begins!! Register for Q-Con XVIII On the Day!

Unfortunately, one of the Q-Con venue lifts has a mechanical fault, making disabled access impossible to the floor hosting most of our anime screenings, and some of our anime events.  A second stream of the Dubbed Anime Screenings is now available on the 2nd Floor (Anne Maguire Room) to provide access via alternative lifts.  Please ask our staff for more information.
We are very sorry for this, as it is beyond our control - the rest of the convention remains accessible via alternative lifts, including the cosplay masquerade.

If you've missed your chance to pre-register don’t worry, come down on the day - the weekend pass is £20, and a day pass for each day costs only £10.
To register on the day, simply come to the Registration Area on the left as you enter the front door to the QUB Students' Union - there is a dedicated entrance which will be sign-posted.  You will need to fill in a short registration form, and provide this -along with your entry fee- to one or our registration staff - you will then be supplied with your badge, events guide and convention pack.  Registration will open at noon on Friday, while game registration for Friday evening begins at 6pm, for games starting at 7pm.  Registration will be open throughout the day, each day of the convention.

For more details on opening times and finding the convention venue, please look at our venue details page.
Last year we sold out on the Saturday and Sunday of Q-Con so we'd advise getting down as early as you can to get your convention pass.

Please note that if you wish to attend the Over 18 sections of the convention (Saturday evening) you will require an age verification wristband, which will be issued to attendees each day from the SU Reception desk on the Ground Floor. You must bring valid photographic ID (Valid Driving Licence/Passport, QUB or UU Student Card, or valid ID Card with the PASS hologram on it).

Larp Blurb!

Thursday, 16 June 2011 19:43

As if the RPG blurs being released wasnt awesome enough we now have the larp blurb!

*Some Mother’s Son*

*A Werewolf: the Forsaken Larp for 10 to 15 players, no experience necessary
*

Jane stood and fought when they took Limerick. She had a family; a husband
and a son, and carrying to term isn’t easy for our kind. So when the
monsters came she took to tooth and claw to tear the bastards a new one, and
fell fighting for those she loved. We figured the family died too, and tried
not to dwell on it. But now the spirits are getting exited; “Her son has the
strongest blood”, “Her son will soon see Change”. Poor bastard’s sitting in
the biggest nest in Ireland, and these crazy bloody shafts of light aren’t
going to let us leave him there.

*Premise*
Two or three packs of Forsaken enter Limerick in an effort to find the son
of a slain comrade.

*Game Style*
Mental 3/5
Physical 2/5
Social 3/5

*Action & Challenges:* While this game will have potential for combat, it is
avoidable depending on how the players choose to address it.
*Darkness:* The characters are tracking the child of a fallen ally through a
darker version of Limerick inhabited by demonic spiders. Nasty things may
occur.
*Drama:* Room will certainly be made, so this is primarily up to the
players.
*Mystery/Intrigue:* The task will not be straightforward, and will involve a
fair deal of investigation.
*Manners:* Not in the conventional sense, but it will be necessary to the
plot.
*Pace:* Varies on players, will be aiming for a mixture of fast pace and
cautious investigative scenes.

This Larp will be ran on saturday from 1pm to 4pm
Entry is €2

Announcing Q-Con XVIII Starcraft 2 Tournament

Thursday, 09 June 2011 23:28

Donny Vermillion does not approve of this message...Q-Con XVIII Starcraft 2 Tournament

This year Q-Con will be hosting an Invitational Starcraft 2 tournament over the Saturday and Sunday of Q-Con.

This year's inaugural Q-Con tournament will be a partly invitational event with a limited number of slots available on the day. The event will be casted live in the Students' Union by James Dobbie, Patrick McClurg and Stewart Millar and is an ideal event for newbies to Starcraft and hardcore players alike.

With games going on throughout the weekend, people new to the competitive Starcraft 2 scene are guaranteed to learn a ton over the course of Q-Con. For those just spectating it will be a great fun and social experience - consider it like watching football for nerds.

Updates to Boardgames and RPG's

We've added even more games to our Boardgames and RPG sections and we've big updates on the way to our Anime Screening and Anime Event sections

ask not what your Con can do for you, but for what you can do for your con?

Hello all and welcome to the official site for Gaelcon 2011.

I'm Dave Gorman and I was lucky enough to be elected Con Director at the IGA's AGM. I would like to thank the IGA for that vote of confidence in me, I really enjoyed my year as Leprecon Director, and am looking forward to the task of directing Gaelcon.

As you all know, it takes more than even the best Con Director (which I am far from) to run any Convention. So, how am I going to run this Convention you ask? Well, I'm very glad you asked me that, as I have a fantastic Committee with members from around the country to make Gaelcon once again the national convention. This hand picked team will once again help ensure a very enjoyable Gaelcon for all and I couldn't do this job without them, so thanks guys/girls for giving up your free time to help me out.

That's all for now, if you have any questions please get in touch via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Roleplaying Games Submissions

Thursday, 10 February 2011 00:00

And a fine Mahok to you all!

Here readers may uncover the secrets of getting YOUR RPG or LARP scenario running at Gaelcon.

If you’re interested in submitting a game, please send the details to us at The deadline for receipt of submissions is May 31st 2010. Believe us, that's less time than you think it is. If details of the game change much between submission of the blurb and Gaelcon, we'd really appreciate you updating us, as nobody wants to sign up for a World of Darkness game only to find  that somewhere in September it became FATAL...

The deadline for receipt of completed games is the 30th September. It'll make everyone’s life (yours included) much, much easier if your game is done by then. The RPG/LARP coordinators get to panic a bit less, and you get a nice stress-free run up to the con without spending the night before writing in a frenzy of coffee and typos! Everybody wins! We can't guarentee a game sent in after that will be used, sorry!

Now, the gritty details. Here's what we need from you if you decide to write us a game:

RPG Submission Guidelines

Thursday, 18 November 2010 10:21

Below you will find the submission guidelines for submitting an RPG to Conspiracy 2011. Unfortunately we cannot accept any further LARP submissions. Please do read these guidelines, if you plan to submit a game.

Please submit your game to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The following file formats are acceptable,

Word, Rich Text Format, PDF, HTML,

All images must be submitted embedded in these above file formats (no weird file formats as we want to be able to print your submission as you wrote it).

The initial submission: (What we need.)

1. A Blurb of your game.

Try to aim for about 80 words (max 100). Try to not be too vague, people like to read blurbs with a brief plot synopsis and that give general feel of the genre of your game.

 2. Game System and Setting

If your game has an established Setting what is it? If you have an established Game System, what is it?

 3. Contact Details.

Name, email address and phone number.

 4. GM required?

If there is need of another table of your game can you suggest another individual to GM that table? Do you need us to find a GM for you, if so remember it’s easier to find GMs for certain systems (if it’s homebrew we’ll be less able to find a spare head)

5. Player Count

RPGs should be pitched for 5 players, but if you feel you need more or less let us know and we’ll see if we can accommodate.

6. Game length

Our RPG slots are 3 hours long as standard, but if you want to run a marathon or a very fast game, we can see what we can do if you let us know well in advance.

The Final Submission:

The deadline for receipt of final game submission is the 1st September. We strongly urge you to get your RPG in at before that point, but if you are lagging behind do contact our RPG coordinator This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it (he won’t bite your head off).

What we need from you with your final submission:

 Character Sheets,

For each player is a big one.

 Plot in Brief,

So that other GMs can quickly get a handle on what’s going on.

The body of the game.

Whether this is your traditional beginning middle and end, your sandbox style game or something odd with time travel. This is the main content of your game. This should not be three pages long and written on a takeaway snack box.

Any handouts,

If you mention handouts include them.

 Any special requirements,

Sound, lighting, back rub, etc… We can’t guarantee that you’ll get what you want here, but it’s always worth asking.

There’ll also be a lot of other card games played at the event subject to demand.

Anime Timetable

Edit2: This is our RPG Timetable -

Saturday 10-1

Dude Where’s My Synthcoke? : A Cyberpunk 2020 scenario for five players by John Fallon

Night City is a town full of violence, vice, guns and cyberware (and stupid haircuts) where the streets are ruled by pimps, pushers and boostergangs.
You have pulled off the the biggest score of your life; transport 2 million eurobucks worth of synthcoke from Denver to Night City to earn a reward of 100,000 each. The Synthcoke has been stored in your safehouse and will be picked up by John “Stabjack” Carson’s goons tomorrow. To celebrate your success you go to a nightclub and get wasted. As you stagger home at 5am to get some sleep, you find the door to your safehouse torn off its hinges. This won’t end well, Stabjack wants his merchandise.

Hero’s Don’t Get Paid : A WHFRP 2nd edition scenario for five players by Tadeusz Cantwell

It is after the Archaon’s the invasion has been stopped. For the semi-lawless lands of Ostland little has changed, with many desperate men who fight to eat. Who fight to get some better armour and weapons, that will help them survive the next fight. Poor nobles hope to buy the loyalty of killers. Both mistrust the other to hold their end of the bargain.

Corporate Enforcement – An “Aliens” themed Dark Heresy system game for five players by Aodh O’Mahony

It’s the future…IN SPAAAAACE!! and strange rumours are spreading in the Colonial fleet that an elite Marine company and their incredibly valuable ship, the USS Sulaco, have vanished in deep space. Also for some reason the Brass are cracking down on the Company goons and you’ve been hearing that Weyland-Yutani facilities all across the Sector are being raided. So it’s time to lock and load meatbags! Next stop Zeta Prime! Hooooooooooooo ah!

Saturday 2-5

The Chicago Express Horror : A Savage Worlds scenario for five players by John Fallon

There’s no escape, you’ve finally going catch them! A pair of con-artists have been wanted by the FBI since 1931 and have managed to evade capture 5 times. Recently an informant gave information stating they were to travel on the New York Central Railroad express train to Chicago. If the police try to apprehend them at Grand Central Station they might get wise and escape again, so instead three undercover agents board the train to find and arrest them, the con-artist can’t escape on a moving train!
Unfortunately a first-class luxury express train is a tempting target for mobsters who make a living on robbery and murder. And there is something on the train that feeds and thrives on murder.

Firefly – The Mark: A Cortex system game for 4-6 players by David Costelloe

Branson’s Mark is small little moon orbiting the dead world of Shadow. Privately owned by Jonah Ceaser Branson, this little hunk of nowhere offers little to see to the untrained observer except for Branson’s own small religious commune, an honest, god-fearing collective of kindred spirits.
But things aren’t as rosy as they appear to be on the Mark. A lot of talk about People paying a visit to Branson’s collective not coming back, kidnapping, brainwashing and a ban on any tech – except for the orbital defence grid.
But now Branson’s bitten off more than he can chew. An MPs daughter has gone missing and was last seen on a transport headed for the Mark. And the right honorable member of Parliament want’s her back safe and sound. Enter the crew of the mercenary ship Manifest Destiny, a mish-mash of career criminals, ner-do-wells former Browncoats and ex-Purplebellies. The mission is simple: get in, find the girl, get out.
Should be easy. It’s not like anyone ever died for their religion, right?

Vampire The Requiem Game by Darc Pyro

Blurb update soon…

Sunday 12-3

HeroQuest™ The Boardgame – The RPG : A parody for four heroes by John Fallon

Barbarian, Elf, Dwarf and Wizard are brave heroes who on a weekly basis fight random monsters in dungeons in quests vaguely related to stopping an evil wizard or something.
One weekend the brave heroes have a well earned rest in a tavern, unaware that soon the good wizard Mentor™ will request that they fight monsters in a dungeon for some reason.
As usual Elf and Dwarf bitch constantly about the superiority of their respective cultures (dispite the fact that both are in severe decline) as Barbarian grins stupidly at the barmaid thus spilling ale on his already filty loincloth. Meanwhile wizard muses on some observations he can’t explain. Why are only four heroes sent on these quests? Why doesn’t Mentor™ ever join them seeing how he is so powerful? If dungeons are full of monsters, where are the toilets? And why can’t monsters open doors???

Legend of the Five Mings – A BESM scenario for five players by Aidan Marsh

When Frudu the Great finally shattered the Ming of Power against the Potter’s Wheel of Doom, it was thought that would be an end to all the troubles.
However, unbeknownst to him, the Ming was not destroyed, but shattered in to five pieces which were scattered to the four corners of the world. There they lay, forgotten for centuries while a pseudo-Japanese culture grew up around them. Now, a new Dark Lord has arisen and seeks to reunite the Five Pieces of the Ming for his own nefarious purposes.
Thankfully, these are safe in the care of the five heroes being sent to stop him.

We’re not THAT mental - by Neal “Bubbles” McNamara

Welcome to Sgt. Horse’s Looney Bin, a big majestic mental institution located in a small town called Lake Vertigo. You are one of five questionably sane characters who believe that they do not belong here with the other crazies and your little group of oddballs plan to take action and get the hell outta there! Fighting, lying and sneaking your way through the massive complex avoiding the detection of your warden Sgt Horse.

Q-Con XVII Is Largest Q-Con Ever!

Tuesday, 29 June 2010 10:06

Q-Con XVII Is Largest Q-Con Ever With Over 1300 People In Attendance!

Q-Con XVII is now over, what a weekend that was! We had over 1300 people in attendance making it the largest Q-Con ever and thanks to your generous donations we also raised over £1500 for our charity QUB RAG.

Photos and videos from Q-Con are starting to trickle in and we should have our online gallery updated soon. In the meantime our attendees and staff have already uploaded hundreds of photos online to Facebook and other social networking sites.

Remember that while we only run Q-Con once a year the same social gaming spirit can be found twice a week at our regular QUB Dragonslayers meetings in the Queens University Students Union. So if you enjoyed attending Q-Con, making friends, playing lots of games and are over 18 (I have to stress this part I'm afraid) check out one of our weekly meetings on Tuesdays or Saturdays.

A massive thank you to all our attendees, you participated in more games and events than ever before and really made this a Q-Con to remember. We couldn't have done it without you.

All being well we hope to see you again next year for Q-Con XVIII, like all good 18th birthdays it should be one hell of a party.
